Grob
This event is a 3-round unrated “Quick Theme” event, G/30.
All
games will start 1. g4 !? And then you are on your own.
This is a great time to face this tricky (but
unsound) opening by white while the pressure is off. Though the
opening is not recommended, it does have some poison waiting for the
unsuspecting black player.
The Spike or Grob Opening line begins with the ugly
looking 1. g4. Many players would not dream of making such an ugly
first move in a serious game of chess. It wrecks the Kingside pawn
structure with an unprotected advanced flank pawn. But, as you are
about to see, it offers white many tactical shots along unusual opening
lines. I began playing the Grob as an opportunity to exercise my
tactical skills, and have some fun along the way.
The Grob is a wonderful surprise weapon against good players who are
solidly booked up on common openings. I found the Grob especially
lethal in fast time control games like blitz (a time control where a
player must make all his moves in 5 minutes). For example, I played a
Grob blitz against one A-class player at the Huntsville Chess Club. I
won the game in very few moves. Appalled, he demanded that I play that
ugly opening again. We did, and I won again. This cycle continued for
five games. The Grob won each game to the horror of my stunned opponent.
The Grob is effective in slower time controls too. The Swiss
correspondence master Grob used his namesake to win many pretty
correspondence games. In this case, a B-Class player defeated a strong
master with the Grob.

Sicilian
This event is a 3-round unrated “Quick Theme” event, G/30.
All
games will start 1. e4 c5 And then you are on your own.
The Sicilian Defense has the reputation of being black's
most
aggressive response to 1.e4. With 1...c5, black immediately discourages
white from playing 2.d4 because black would be able to capture the
pawn. In response, white would be reluctant to recapture with the queen
because the queen would be extremely vulnerable in the center of the
board.
In order to pursue the center, white must instead prepare
d2-d4
with 2.Nf3. When white continues with d4, black will capture and white
will be able to recapture with the Nf3 rather than the queen.
Black can pursue many different strategies in the
Sicilian, but
nearly all have one thing in common. Black will usually try to take
advantage of the open c-file by placing one or more rooks and sometimes
the queen there. Very often, therefore, black will castle on the
kingside and pursue an attack on the queenside. By contrast, in part
because the black king is on the kingside, white will attack there.

Blitzkrieg - Rds 1-9 $2/$3
This event is a 9-round, single night non-rated blitz event, G/5,
“Open” (i.e.
not broken into
sections
by rating).
The intended start-time for the first round is 7:50 or earlier.
Speed Chess or Blitz Chess is probably the most popular form of chess
but does not help one to master the game. In speed chess, each side has
5 minutes for the
entire game set on a chess clock. This forces
an amazingly fast paced game. The draw backs to speed chess is at the
amateur level of chess, games are extremely sloppy, and nothing is
being
learned. Cafes and other amateur chess scenes are full of speed chess
players
who stay the same level year after year. Slower time controls are the
best
way to improve your chess. Once you have reached a certain level, speed
chess
is great fun, and a way to test your instincts. We would like to have a
great turnout for the February 23 Winter
Blitzkrieg at the Books-a-Million Bookstore and will have a
special
scholastic event proceeding the club event to encourage play from young
players.
Scholastic Blitz Event: Registration at
the door from 6:30 to
6:45, first rounds starts at 6:50. $1 entry fee with first and
second
place prizes. K-12, non rated. 4 rounds, Swiss style, G-5
minutes
Blitz rules.
Club Blitz Event: Registration at the door 7:30
to 7:45, first
round starts at 7:50. Entry fee $2 for members and $3 for
non-members.
G-5 Blitz rules, non rated, round robin with two sections
if enough
players.
We encourage club members to come early to cheer on and support the
scholastic players, and scholastic players are welcome to play in the
club event if they are brave enough. If you know young people
with an
interest in chess, please encourage them to come and join in the fun.
There will be registration on site; the intended registration
end-time is 7:30. Pre-registration is encouraged.

Theme - French - Rds 1-3 $3/$5
This event is a 3-round unrated “Quick Theme” event, G/30.
All
games will start 1. e4 e6 And then you are on your own.
The French Defense derives it's name from a correspondence game played
between London and Paris (1834-1836), won by the Parisians of course.
The French was introduced into master practice in the early 1800s by
(who else?) a Frenchman, La Bourdonnais. I. A. Horowitz also credits
Geza Maroczy with helping to popularize its use beginning around the
end of the 19th century. World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik
however, opines that the real history of the French Defense began with
Aaron Nimzowitsch, who contributed many new ideas, and for whom a major
variation of the French Defense was named. Many World Champions, as
well
as other strong GMs, have wielded the French as a weapon during their
careers, including Karpov, Botvinnik, Korchnoi, Smyslov, Bronstein,
Petrosian, Uhlmann, Capablanca, Reti, Grunfeld, and Alekhine.
More recently, the French has been essayed by the likes of Anand,
Khalifman, Short, Bareev, Van Wely, and Ivanchuk, to name just a
few.

Benko Gambit
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5
The
Benko gambit is one of the most well respected gambits against d4.
Black's counterplay is very durable compared to many other gambits, in
that the queenside pressure can last well into the endgame. There are
several plans however at White's disposal to combat this gambit, the
most radical being to simply countergambit with b6 (after cxb6 a6 b6!?).

Theme - Nimzo Indian - Rds 1-3 $3/$5
This event is a 3-round unrated “Quick Theme” event, G/30.
All
games will start 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4
e6 3 Nc3 Bb4. And then you are on your own.
One of the Queen's Pawn Side Defences, it is named after Latvian GM. Aaron
Nimzowitsch (1886-1935), who pioneered its successful use in 1914.
It is popular with masters and versatile because it enables the Black
pieces to contest the centre without being committed to any specific
pawn structure.
Being "hypermodern" in strategy it uses an "Indian KKt", but does not
set a characteristic fianchetto. Instead, Black's King's Bishop
pins White's Q-side knight (move 3b, left) to control
White's K4(e4) and so prevent an enlarged White pawn centre.
Most lines involve exchanging B-for-Kt - normally a Q-side
disadvantage
to
Black, but here White gets an awkward left wing pawn
group.
Full of strategic possibilities, the defence enables White to adopt any
of several immediate variations (the Rubinstein being the most popular)
while it also allows Black to transpose into the Dutch Defence, the
Queen's Indian Defence, the Old Indian Defence and the Queen's Gambit.

Theme - Kings Indian - Rds 1-3 $3/$5
The 8th event on the GCC 2005 Calendar will start Thursday,
06/30.
It is a 3-round unrated “Quick Theme” event, G/30. All
games will start 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4
e6 3 Nc3 Bb4. And then you are on your own.
The King's Indian Defence is a chess opening that begins 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4
g6 followed by ...Bg7 and ...d6. (3.Nc3 d5 is a Grünfeld Defence
rather than a King's Indian.) White usually continues with either
3.Nc3, 3.Nf3 or 3.g3. The King's Indian is a "hypermodern" opening,
where Black lets White take the center with the view to later ruining
White's "wonderful" position, often by an attack on White's king. It is
a risky opening, which has been a favourite of players such as former
world champions Garry Kasparov, Bobby Fischer and Tigran Petrosian.
Prominent grandmasters John Nunn, Svetozar Gligoric, Wolfgang Uhlmann,
and Larry Christiansen have also played this opening frequently.
The main variations of the King's Indian are:
* Classical Variation 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 0-0
6.Be2 e5
o Main Line or
Mar del Plata variation. 7.0-0 Nc6 8.d5 Ne7 Now white has a wide
variety of moves, including 9.b4, 9.Bd2, 9.Ne1, and 9.Nd2, among
others. Typically, White will try to attack on the queen-side by
preparing c4-c5, while Black will attack on the king-side by moving his
king's knight and starting a pawn storm to attack White's king.
o 7.0-0 Nbd7
o 7.0-0 exd4
8.Nxd4
o Exchange
Variation 7.dxe5 dxe5 8.Qxd8 Rxd8 White exchanges queens and tries to
prove that he has a small advantage in the queenless middlegame. The
line is also often played by White players hoping for an early draw,
but there is still a lot of play left in the position.
* Sämisch Variation 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.f3 This
often leads to very sharp play with the players castling on opposite
wings and attacking each other's kings, as in the Bagirov-Gufeld game
given below.
* Averbakh Variation 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Be2 0-0
6.Bg5
* Four Pawns Attack 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5. f4 A sharp
line in which White tries to overrun Black with his center pawns. Such
a strategy entails considerable risk, and analysis constantly shifts
back and forth as to its validity. The pawn on f4 prevents Black's
usual e5 break, but Black can get counterplay with a c5 break instead.
The main line Four Pawns position can also be reached from a Sicilian
move order.
* Fianchetto Variation 3.Nf3 Bg7 4.g3 0-0 5.Bg2 d6
6.Nc3 A solid line in which, unlike many variations, White does not
have to worry about an attack on his king.
Here is one of the most famous King's Indians, a brilliancy by the late
Ukrainian-American grandmaster Eduard Gufeld, who called it his "Mona
Lisa":
Bagirov-Gufeld, USSR championship 1973 1.d4 g6 2.c4 Bg7 3.Nc3 d6 4.e4
